We are largely shaped by our environment in terms of our thoughts, attitudes, and feelings. There has been much discussion about how attitude is contagious and how the right people can really change your mental state. Unfortunately, we live in a world that is filled with negativity and pessimism.
Within five minutes of watching the news, you will be bombarded with death, destruction, and impending doom (and that was true even before COVID). There seems to be no better compliment to good news than bad news.
The good is often overshadowed by the bad. Our views of the world will largely be shaped by the media we consume (including television, social media, and the internet as a whole). Sadly, much of what we see emphasizes negativity.
Reality should never be denied. Sometimes, the truth hurts. In addition, the news is, first and foremost, a business. Views, clicks, and shares are generated by headlines and lead stories.
Like moths drawn to a flame, we are attracted to negativity. We have a weird affinity for tragedy, as evidenced by the way people slow down to observe a car accident.
That doesn’t mean the good news isn’t out there — we just often skip over it because it doesn’t catch our attention. In a big way, we’ve decided good news isn’t newsworthy.
This is actually pretty extraordinary when you think about it; it implies that good news is so common as to be unremarkable.
In the same way that you can control the kind of people you surround yourself with, you can also control the environment in which you live.
How do you consume media? Are you more likely to listen to negative messages or do you search for uplifting ones? What makes you happy? What makes you mad? Are you boosted by your music or are you dragged down by it?
Having a happy, positive environment doesn’t mean you should avoid sadness at all times. It’s not ignoring the bad – it’s just emphasizing it.
Our ship tends to fill with negative water when we feel down. It’s not inevitable. If we choose to do things that allow us to float above it, we will be able to do so. Moods, attitudes, and feelings are more under your control than you may realize. Even in these dark times, one can find some good. Find it by making the decision to do so.
Float above the negativity today Be resilient and don’t allow the negativity of the masses to get inside your head.
